How to Spot Fitness Disinformation (and Protect Your Progress)

Sep 5, 2025

Don’t Fall for Fitness Myths

They’re all over social media: “miracle” workouts or supplements that promise results almost overnight.

And they can be tempting, especially when we’re motivated to stay strong, mobile, and healthy.

But not everything you see or hear about fitness is grounded in science. In fact, misinformation (and its evil twin, disinformation) can lead you down paths that waste your time and money – and could even put your health at risk.

Here are a few simple ways you can separate fact from fiction when it comes to fitness advice.

1. Check the Source

Reliable fitness information usually comes from credible organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or World Health Organization (WHO). If the claim comes from a random influencer or a product ad, be cautious. Does the person have actual credentials or just a big following? That distinction matters.

2. Look for Evidence, Not Hype

Sound advice is usually backed up by studies, not flashy before-and-after photos. For example, research shows that strength training helps preserve muscle mass and bone density as we age, but it doesn’t happen overnight. If a workout claims to “torch belly fat in a week,” that’s a red flag.

3. Beware of One-Size-Fits-All Promises

No single plan works for everyone. Safe, effective fitness takes into account age, injuries, goals, and lifestyle. If someone suggests there’s only one perfect workout for everyone over 50, you can bet it’s not grounded in science.

4. Watch for Fear or Guilt Tactics

If an article or video makes you feel afraid, guilty, or pressured into buying a product, take a step back. Disinformation often relies on emotion to override critical thinking.

5. Ask Smarter Questions

Instead of relying on vague “listen to your body” advice, try asking: What does the research show? Who benefits financially if I follow this plan? Does it align with safe, long-term fitness practices? These questions help cut through confusion and guide you toward trustworthy choices.

Stay Smart and Strong

When we learn to spot red flags in fitness advice, we protect not only our time and health but also our confidence. Next time you see a flashy claim, pause and check the source, the science, and how it aligns with your goals. Staying informed is one of the best tools we have for building strength and resilience at any age.
