
You’ve probably heard me say this many times during our classes together: don’t skip the cooldown!
Why do I make such a big deal over this? Because a cooldown isn’t what you do after your workout; it’s part of your workout. What happens inside your body during those 5 minutes is just as important as the work you just did.
The cooldown is more than just a moment to catch your breath. There’s real biology happening, and skipping it means you’re missing out on some of the most important recovery benefits of the entire session.
Recovery vs Chaos
When you’re working out, there’s a whole lot happening in your body: your muscles, heart and lungs are working harder, of course. But there are big changes in your bloodstream too. Several hormones surge simultaneously: adrenaline (which primes your muscles and sharpens your focus), cortisol (which mobilizes energy), and feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin (which create that sense of accomplishment). All of these are useful in the moment; your body is doing exactly what it should be doing.
With a proper cooldown, all of these hormones decline gradually. Your adrenaline tapers smoothly from peak levels down to normal over several minutes. Your cortisol follows the same gentle slope. Meanwhile, dopamine and serotonin stay elevated a bit longer, extending that post-workout mood boost. This smooth, coordinated transition tells your nervous system: “We’re done. It’s safe to settle down.”
But if you skip the cooldown, something very different happens. Your adrenaline crashes hard. It plummets abruptly rather than tapering, creating a sudden jolt to your system. At the same time, your cortisol doesn’t decline smoothly; it actually spikes higher than it would during a normal cooldown, and then stays elevated much longer. Your dopamine and serotonin also crash faster. Your body gets a chaotic, contradictory signal all at once: “Stop moving” and “stay stressed” simultaneously.
The result is can be a wired-but-depleted feeling – jittery, restless, oddly exhausted. This isn’t recovery; it’s dysregulation. Your nervous system is confused because the hormonal signals are incoherent.

A cooldown prevents this chaos by allowing adrenaline to decline gradually while preventing cortisol from spiking. It extends the window during which dopamine and serotonin remain elevated.
Research on heart rate variability and vagal modulation (the nerve that controls your parasympathetic, or “rest and digest,” system) shows that an active cooldown actually accelerates the recovery of this calming pathway. Your body gets the clear, coherent signal it needs: “Work is over. Now we rest.”
Your Heart Needs Gradual Pressure Relief
When we’re exercising, our heart rate climbs and our blood pressure rises. That’s normal and healthy.
But pressure doesn’t drop instantly when we stop moving. If we go from full intensity to complete stillness, our cardiovascular system experiences a sudden shock that can leave us feeling dizzy, nauseous, or faint.
On the other had, a gradual cooldown – 5 to 10 minutes of easy movement – allows blood pressure and heart rate to come down smoothly. The American Heart Association recommends this cooldown period specifically because it protects the heart during this vulnerable transition.
Think of it this way; you wouldn’t slam on the brakes in a car at high speed. Same thing applies to your heart. When your heart rate recovers gradually, the parasympathetic nervous system has time to gently take over cardiovascular control from the sympathetic system that was revving everything up.
Your Muscles Need The Metabolic “Cleanup”
During intense exercise, your muscles produce metabolic byproducts like lactate and hydrogen ions. These build up in the tissue and contribute to fatigue.
An active cooldown, even at a very low intensity, keeps your circulation moving. This allows your cardiovascular system to flush these byproducts out more efficiently. Without the cooldown, these compounds linger longer, which is why people sometimes feel sore or sluggish after skipping recovery.

This one matters especially as we get older. Research consistently shows that how quickly your heart rate recovers after exercise – measured one minute after you stop – is a strong predictor of cardiovascular health and longevity.
People whose heart rate drops quickly during recovery tend to have better autonomic nervous system function and lower cardiac risk. This recovery speed is linked to how well your parasympathetic nervous system can “switch back on” after the stress of exercise.
Skipping the cooldown doesn’t just affect how you feel today; it means you’re missing an opportunity to build the recovery capacity that protects your heart long-term. Every time you cooldown properly, you’re essentially training your cardiovascular system to recover more efficiently. And that becomes increasingly valuable as we age.
The Bottom Line
Your body spent the last 30 to 45 minutes working hard for you. The cooldown is your way of saying thank you, and letting it know it’s safe to settle back into ease. Skip the cooldown and you’re leaving your nervous system in chaos, your hormones dysregulated, and your cardiovascular recovery incomplete. Those five to ten minutes aren’t a luxury. They’re part of the workout itself.
