Nutrition Tip of the Week: How To Choose Healthier Carbs
Carbohydrates are your body’s primary source of energy, fiber and many nutrients.
Not all carbs are created equal. Complex carbs, like brown rice, beans, vegetables and fruits naturally contain fiber, nutrients and water. They keep you feeling full longer. They help you maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Simple, refined or processed carbs like white rice, baked goods made from refined flour, or potato chips have been stripped of their nutrients. They stimulate your appetite and leave you wanting more. They are digested quickly, causing spikes in blood sugar levels.
Cutting back on simple carbs can facilitate weight loss, improve heart health and help control blood sugar. But you don’t need to eliminate all carbs to get these benefits.
Besides, cutting all carbs can reduce energy levels, increase your risk of nutrient deficiency, and cause constipation.
We eat foods, not just nutrients. Enjoy eating meals made of a wide variety of mostly whole foods and you’ll get all the nutrients you need.
