Tip of the Week: Morning Stretches To Do In Bed
Start your day healthfully with this stretching sequence you can do in bed!
When we think of exercise, we often think of running, strength training or Pilates. Our flexibility is often just an afterthought. But flexibility is an important and beneficial part of physical fitness – and you can do it before your feet even touch the ground in the morning!
Every movement we make requires a degree of flexibility. Whether we’re doing housework, running or lifting weights, if your muscles are stiff and tight, it will be harder to do that activity correctly, and your risk of injury will be higher.
Stretching first thing in the morning – even before you get out of bed – helps increase circulation and relieves any leftover tension or pain from sleeping the night before. Breathing deeply and slowly stimulates your parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system, preparing your mind and body for the day ahead.
Try these stretches the next time you wake up. Put on some soft, relaxing music or simply enjoy the sound of the morning around you. Breathe. Allow yourself to physically and mentally arrive into your day in a calm and peaceful manner. (Especially if it’s a Monday!!!)
Feel free to share with your early-rising friends!
